Ghazal is a form of Urdu poetry that consists of couplets that rhyme and have a refrain. Each line shares the same meter. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.
The poem given is a ghazal by Tahir Saud Kertapuri, a contemporary Urdu poet. It has the following structure:
- The first couplet is called the matla, where the rhyme scheme and refrain are established. The rhyme scheme is -l, and the refrain is mahu-e-amal (meaning futile or ineffective).
- The second to fifth couplets are independent and unrelated to each other, but they share the same rhyme scheme and refrain.
- The last couplet is called the maqta, where the poet uses his pen name (takhallus) Saud in the second line.
The meaning of some difficult words are:
- Khuram-e-naz: graceful walk
- Shakh-e-gulab: rose branch
- Sharaabi: intoxicated
- Safed o surkh: white and red
- Kunol: anemone flower
- Khwah-e-chashm-e-dam: eyelash
- Aseer-e-zulf: prisoner of hair
- Aseer-e-raqs o surur: prisoner of dance and joy
- Mutma-in: satisfied
- Kamyab: successful
- Muqam-e-hu: the station of annihilation in God
- Mukeen: resident
- Ahl-e-tamkinat: people of stability
- Nishaat: delight
- Iztiraab: agitation
- Saahiban-e-mushk-e-khatan: owners of musk-pods
- Aab o taab: splendor
- Ghazaal-e-fikr o farasat: gazelle of thought and insight
- Haqeeqatein: realities
A possible translation of the ghazal is:
The rose branch is futile in its graceful walk
The intoxicated one is futile in his sight
The white and red anemones have eyelashes like traps
They stand in the way, but youth is futile
The prisoner of hair's knots, the prisoner of dance and joy
You are satisfied, but success is futile
The people of stability did not become residents at the station of annihilation
So you go there, let the noble one be futile
What is this state of our heart, O lord of love?
Delight is futile, agitation is futile
The owners of musk-pods forgot their goal
They are all ruined by splendor, futile
The gazelles of thought and insight are lost, Saud
Are these realities or dreams? Futile
